Docklight Theatre is a professional non-profit theatre company dedicated to promoting new works for new audiences. Through the exploration of our current theatrical canon and performance of new plays and adaptations, we will offer new insight into the importance of the theater as a relevant modern art form.
Innovation: Our organization is uniquely artist driven and controlled. Our Board of Directors is made up of the members of our company, and we have separate organization, The Producers Circle which provides guidance and support in our projects. This way our artists have the freedom to create and change the company.
Transparancy: Docklight Theatre is completely unique to the Chicago theater world in that as artists we attempt to make our process of creating theater as completely transparent as possible. Every rehearsal with Docklight Theatre is an open rehearsals where anyone can sit and watch our process of making the show. To sit in on a rehearsal simply email Icaneatthesun@yahoo.com, or call 917-428-4152. In addition, the thoughts and reactions of the artistic director and the executive producer are recorded on this website. Simply click on the weblogs link, and read about our entire process of bringing the show together.
Education: Docklight Theatre is committed to changing the perception of theater through education. We offer our performances, our process to the public, but most importantly through the workshops and classes that are available by calling 917-428-4152, we hope to teach and educate students and adults about how to view the theatre, and how use and enjoy the process of performance.
History Docklight Theatre Company was founded in December of 2002 by Michael Rau and Joshua Hadro. We received our Articles of Incorporation in April, and are currently completing our 501c(3) Not-for-Profit Form, (yet all donations to our company are tax-deductible). Our first public event was held on April 19th at the Chicago Shakespeare Studio Theater, where a staged reading of Michael Yates Crowley's "I Can Eat the Sun." From that reading, we were able to raise enough money to rent the Strawdog Theater, on 3829 N. Broadway, to mount a full scale production of the show. We then received a generous grant from the Chicago Title and Trust Foundation, and we are currently in the process of putting on the MidWest premiere of "I Can Eat The Sun."
